Goose had debated long and hard about this but he knew it was father’s day in Australia and he should have talked to … his father while he was back home over break but he just couldn’t bring himself to do it.
He knew that he should do this conversation in person but … he was still scared of getting rejected by Walsh, of the danger that he was putting his father in by acknowledging that he did know the truth after all this time.
Finally he took a deep breath, steadied himself and established a call to Commander Walsh.
“Ranger Gooseman?” Walsh had not been expecting another call so soon, “please don’t tell me this another request for expenses? I’m still covering the cost of your last damaged interceptor,”
Goose blinked, “no, it’s not about that …” he was quick to say, “I … ha…”
He had been about to say ‘happy father’s day’ but he couldn’t do it, he stared back at Walsh and tried again
“I … I know,” Goose said very quietly instead, his shoulders slumping as he did.
“You know what?” Walsh tilted his head, curiously.
“Everything,” Goose said quietly, “about you being my father, about your deal with Senator Wheiner and about Max … I … I know he’s still alive,”
Whatever Walsh had been expecting, it wasn’t that.
“How…?” Walsh looked up sharply at that, “who told you? Was it Wheiner?”
The fact he didn’t even try to deny it spoke volumes.
“No, I had visitors back in April, you remember when Max and Josie appeared back when I was a student …they were from a future … well a possible future,” Goose amended, since he had definitely experienced a few different timelines since she had been at Fandom, “I had two daughters show up and … they told me you were their grandfather, I found out that you put your dna in me, when I was created … I … don’t understand why?”
Walsh was quiet, “I … I was hoping you would never find out Shane,” he said softly, “it … I’ve always been busy with my work, I wanted children of my own and you were going to be the last batch of Supertroopers created and I thought it was my chance, even if I could never acknowledge you … I knew you were still my child,” there was a pause, “ … what I did was extremely illegal, you must know that and there would be serious consequences for both of us if you … you’ve known since April?”
Goose could only nod, “I … I didn’t know what to do with the information, it was pointed out that it could be dangerous, even telling the team …but I don’t understand how could Wheiner know the truth before I did? Why didn’t you want me to know?”
Walsh sighed, “this isn’t a conversation to be had on this network, especially when we don’t know who might be listening Shane,”
There was another awkward pause and then finally, “happy father’s day,” Goose said softly before he lost his nerve.
Walsh was surprised at that and his expression softened, “thank you Shane,” he said, “I’ll - I’ll see you Parents Weekend, we’ll continue this conversation then,” he promised and disconnected the call.
Goose leaned back in his chair, that had gone a lot better than he had thought it would, he hadn’t gotten to talk about Max but the fact that Walsh was planning to visit for Parents Weekend … it did make it seem like that he wasn’t planning on rejecting him, at least at the moment anyway.
[door’s closed, post is open. That Goose called home is fine for broadcast but the details of his conversation are NFB please!]
